Commentary

Minute   Description
Thanks for joining our commentary this evening. Until next time, goodbye.
Manchester City are surely on their way into the quarter-finals of the Champions League after hammering Basel 4-0 this evening at St-Jakob Park. The visitors took the lead through Ilkay Gundogan and were relentless from then on. Bernardo Silva doubled their advantage before Sergio Aguero scored a third in the 23rd minute. Pep Guardiola's men notched a fourth as Gundogan scored his second and perhaps should have had more goals, but the result should more than see them ease through to the last eight in the competition.

City are almost at walking pace now. The priority for the visitors will be to see out the clean sheet.
74' SAVE! GUNDOGAN IS DENIED HIS HAT-TRICK! Aguero breaks down the left and cuts the ball back into the box. Gundogan meets it on the half-volley, striking his effort into the ground. However, Vaclik gets across with a desperate dive to make the stop.

63' A luxury for Guardiola as he withdraws De Bruyne for David Silva.
62' Fernandinho lines up an ambitious strike from distance, but his effort sails comfortably over the bar. City want to kill off this contest tonight - and have probably done so already.

57' Sane returns to action after a lay-off as he replaces Sterling.

GOALLLLLLLLLL!!!! BRILLIANT FROM GUNDOGAN! City are surely through to the quarter-finals now. Gundogan curls his effort towards the top corner and the ball sails into the back of the net. A fantastic strike.

47' SAVE! Gundogan feeds the ball into the path of De Bruyne and he goes for the strike at goal, only to fire his effort straight at Vaclik.
46' We're back underway at St-Jakob Park.
Manchester City are in complete control of their contest against Basel at the interval, leading 3-0 at St-Jakob Park. Ilkay Gundogan put the visitors ahead with a well-placed header in the 14th minute before Bernardo Silva lofted the ball over Tomas Vaclik to double their advantage. Sergio Aguero put them well and truly in command with a powerful drive from the edge of the box, leaving Raphael Wicky's men with a huge task even just to make the tie competitive. Pep Guardiola will be delighted with his side's performance in the opening 45 minutes.
HALF-TIME: BASEL 0-3 MANCHESTER CITY
45' The referee ends the first half.
44' The visitors defend well deep in their own half as Riveros tries to force the issue. Between Walker, Gundogan, Fernandinho and Aguero, City manage to clear the danger with relative ease.
43' Serey Die goes in hard on De Bruyne and the referee awards a free-kick to the visitors, much to the fury of the Basel midfielder and the home fans.
41' Lecroix is put under pressure from Aguero inside his own box, but does well to calmly pass back to Vaclik. Basel put themselves under duress as the keeper opts to play it out from the back before Lecroix sends it long downfield.
39' Sterling is pulled back down the left flank by Xhaka. However, De Bruyne's delivery, for once, lets him down as he fails to beat Oberlin at the near post and the home side clear the danger.
38' Xhaka goes into the book for pulling back Sterling.
37' CLOSE! It's almost four for City as De Bruyne latches on to Delph's cross from the left on the edge of the box. He connects with a strike on the half-volley, only to see his attempt sail fractionally over the bar.
35' Gundogan floats the ball over the top for Bernardo Silva's run, but it just has too much loft for the Portuguese to collect unmarked in the box.
33' SAVE! Vaclik saves his side from conceding a fourth as he beats Sterling to the punch as the winger breaks into the box. The keeper gets the ball in their initial challenge before knocking it away from the England man on the rebound for a corner.
32' City move the ball at pace in the Basel half and Gundogan comes inches away from picking out Sterling in the box, only to be denied by a good block from Lecroix.
31' Oberlin collects in the centre circle and looks for the quick offload behind Kompany for Elyounoussi's run. However, the Belgian makes the interception to quell the attack.
30' Basel are desperately trying to stem the flow of City's attacks by establishing a passing game, but the press has been relentless from the visitors.
28' Gundogan and De Bruyne link up in the final third, but Suchy gets across just in time to stop the German from firing at goal.
26' Guardiola could not have dreamed for a better start to the tie than this. His side can almost coast through the quarter-finals given the huge advantage provided to them by three away goals.
25' STAT ATTACK! Aguero has scored in all four of his Champions League away appearances so far this season for Manchester City (four goals) - Dwight Yorke is the only other player to do this for an English side in the competition, when he scored in four of his five away appearances for Manchester United in the 1998/99 Champions League season
23' Fernandinho wins his challenge and nudges the ball into Aguero's path to apply the finish.
GOALLLLLLLLLL!!!!!! CITY HAVE THREE!!!!!!! Aguero gets on the scoresheet and City are in dreamland in Basel. The Argentine picks up a loose ball following a challenge from Fernadinho on the edge of the box and drills a powerful strike into the bottom corner. It was a decent effort, although Vaclik did not help his side's cause by not moving.
22' De Bruyne tries to bend a pass behind Xhaka in the final third, with Aguero lurking in the left inside channel. However, the defender does well to head it away before hammering downfield.
20' City have been dicey at the back in the early stages of the contest, but they've been clinical in the final third and almost have one foot in the quarter-finals.
18' GOALLLLLLLLLL!!!! SILVA DOUBLES CITY'S LEAD! The English team have their second goal of the evening as the Portuguese midfielder lifts his effort over Vaclik into the net. De Bruyne started the move down the left flank for Sterling's run into the left inside channel. He sent a cross in for Aguero that was deflected into Bernardo Silva's path. He took one touch to get it on to his left foot before lifting his strike over Vaclik, who got a hand to the ball, but it was not strong enough to keep it out.
15' CHANCE! STOCKER SHOULD EQUALISE! The winger latches on to a ball over the top and just has to make contact to nudge his effort past Ederson on the charge. However, he fails to make sufficient contact and the City keeper makes the block with his feet.
14' De Bruyne whips a delivery into the box with pace and Gundogan meets it with a powerful header to put City ahead.
GOALLLLLLLLLLL!!!!! GUNDOGAN PUTS CITY AHEAD! The visitors take the lead and notch a crucial away goal. Gundogan threatened from an earlier header, only to be denied by Vaclik. However, on this occasion he beats the keeper with a powerful headed effort, guiding De Bruyne's corner past the Basel keeper. The German got the better of Frei at the near post and punished the home side for their slack defending.
12' PENALTY SHOUT! Oberlin goes on the charge down the right inside channel and gets blocked off by Otamendi. The striker looks to the referee for a penalty, but the official dismisses his claim.
10' Bernardo Silva cuts in from the right to send a cross into the box. Lecroix watches the delivery all the way and clears ahead of Vaclik as Sterling lurked behind him.
9' Guardiola's men are putting their foot on the ball to establish their possession game. However, Basel seem quite content to sit deep and use the pace of Oberlin on the break.
7' Suchy slices his clearance at the back and it almost allows Aguero to strike at goal, but it just doesn't fall for the Argentine before Vaclik collects.
5' CHANCE! Oberlin raids behind the City defence and collects Riveros' ball over the top. He only has Ederson to beat and the keeper commits himself - well out of his box. However, Oberlin miscues his attempted lob and Otamendi is there to gather the loose ball. That was a real opportunity for the home side.
4' The visitors press down the left and Sterling looks to exchange passes with Aguero, but he's caught offside on the return.
2' SAVE! City take the set-piece quickly and Bernardo Silva whips the ball into the box with pace. Gundogan rises to head at goal and his effort threatens the net, but Vaclik reacts to turn it over the bar.
Walker is pressed in possession and goes down under Oberlin's challenge. City have a free-kick in a decent position.
1' Stocker tries to cause problems in the early stages of the game, but his progress is stopped by a strong tackle from Otamendi.
We're underway at St-Jakob Park.
