Minute   Description
That's all for our live coverage, thanks for following along. Goodbye!
It was far from straightforward for Manchester City, left frustrated and looking for answers following a tight first half, but Kevin de Bruyne's terrific strike gave them the lead shortly after the restart before Raheem Sterling put the match to bed late on. Sergio Aguero squandered the chance to avoid a tense finish as he was denied by Andiy Pyatov from the penalty spot, while Shakhtar were denied a strong claim of their own following a John Stones handball.
90'+2 City are poised to move into top spot in the group with the win, while Shakhtar will drop into a tie for second with Napoli following their victory at home to Feyenoord tonight in Italy.
90'+1 Viktor Kovalenko replaces Fred for added-time.
90' Bernardo Silva with a good spot there to provide the assist.
THAT SETTLES IT! Sterling delays his run to get on the end of a pull-back from Bernardo Silva and cannon a finish off the underside of the bar and in! The substitutes linking up there for the hosts to seal the three points, with Pep Guardiola leading the applause.
89' A final change for the visitors as Bernard is replaced by Ivan Petryak.
88' Shakhtar throw everyone forward, following another fine save from Pyatov on Sane, as they up the urgency into high gear. They were denied what looked like a clear penalty, but at the same time are a bit lucky not to be 2-0 down here. Can they snatch an equaliser in the final minutes?
86' NOT FAR AWAY! Sane has been the most consistent threat on the night for City, and continues to work hard here for the goal he will feel he deserves. More excellent footwork in the area sees him carve out a chance for himself, but again the finish lets him down as he drags one wide of the far post!
85' Bernardo Silva comes on for the final minutes at the expense of Aguero.
84' TERRIFIC CHALLENGE! That's a crucial intervention from Rakitskiy, who slides in to cut out De Bruyne's cross that seemed destined to meet Aguero in the centre for a tap-in! And that looks to be the last chance of the night for the striker, who is set to be replaced.
82' Time running out for Shakhtar, who are showing every sign of being able to find the equaliser. City are by no means assured of a cake walk to see this out. They're coming under pressure and things are really starting to open up.
81' Ilkay Gundogan enters the fray for City, replacing Silva.
78' Shakhtar's first change of the night sees Marlos replaced by Dentinho.
76' SHAKHTAR DENIED A PENALTY! Stones clearly blocked a cross in from the left with his arm as the replays show, but the referee fails to spot it! That's a massive let-off for the hosts!
74' Looks like some cramping here for Taison who goes down in need of treatment. He's got a couple of players coming to his aid, from both sides, helping him stretch out his hamstring, before the training staff makes their way out.
72' It wasn't a poorly struck penalty from Aguero by any means, but it was a comfortable height for Pyatov and just lacked the necessary pace to squeak by him.
71' PENALTY TO CITY! Ordets commits a clumsy challenge on Sane, following some lovely footwork from the winger, and the referee doesn't hesitate in pointing to the spot! Ordets is already in the book, and is very lucky to not have been sent off here.
70' Sterling comes close to doubling City's lead on the end of a nifty attack, but can't hit the target! The tempo has really picked up now as Shakhtar open up a bit. We're in for an exciting final 20 minutes at the Etihad.
68' Taison flashes his pace as he charges forward on a full-on sprint to kick-start a break for the visitors. He bursts into space on the left and bends in a low cross, but it's just too far ahead of Ferreyra, who had all sorts of space in the centre!
66' Ordets becomes the first player booked on the night for a bit of a careless, and late, challenge on Silva, awarding City a free-kick in a dangerous area to whip in a cross.
64' STAT: No Ukrainian club has ever won an away game in the Champions League against English opposition (D2 L12). In fact, Shakhtar have lost all four of their trips to England in the competition.
62' BETTER! A rare foray forward for Shakhtar in this second half! Bernard twists and turns on the left, leaving Stones with some sore ankles. He pulls it back into the danger area, but no one is on hand for Shakhtar! Back come City and De Bruyne has another go at it, but this time Ismaily puts his body on the line to make an important block.
60' City are beaming with confidence and in complete control here as we reach the hour mark. De Bruyne's opener has done wonders for them, and while openings are still proving a bit hard to come by, that figures to change as Shakhtar will be forced to open up soon.
58' Shakhtar have been second best all over the pitch since the restart and desperately need to find their footing here before the game is out of reach. They're still in it with a chance to leave Manchester with a result, but they have to get their confidence back before they can dream up a comeback.
56' BIG CHANCE! Pyatov holds his ground and spreads himself wide to make a terrific save to deny Aguero on the half-volley from point-blank range! Outstanding stuff from the keeper to prevent City from doubling their lead on the end of a well-worked move.
54' Pep Guardiola makes the first change of the night for either side, as Raheem Sterling enters for the hosts, replacing Gabriel Jesus.
52' STAT: Shakhtar have lost their last four away games in the Champions League, conceding 14 goals and scoring none.
50' Well that goal should go a long way to helping open things up here, and alleviating City's frustrations. Shakhtar will be livid with conceding so early following the restart given how stingy and sharp they were through 45 minutes.
48' David Silva is credited with the assist.
THERE'S YOUR OPENER! It's an absolute peach of a strike from De Bruyne, who takes a square pass from Silva and guides a terrific strike into the top corner, with Pyatov only able to stand and stare as it sails by him and into the back of the net!
46' Back underway at the Etihad!
Goalless at the break at the Etihad and the scoreline is no less than either side deserve following what has been a very evenly contested opening 45 minutes. Everything to play for after the break!
45' Shakhtar posing a threat here, flying forward in numbers as the board goes up to indicate one added minute.
43' STAT: Shakhtar have the opportunity to win their opening two games of a Champions League campaign for the third time after 2007/08 and 2010/11.
41' There's Sane again! He's really starting to grow into the game, displaying some excellent technique and close control here to dribble his way through the defence, before opening up for a shot which bends just wide of the far post from 10 yards!
39' NOT FAR AWAY! That's some poor marking from Otamendi, who lets Ferreyra slip right behind him to get on the end of a delivery from a set-piece, but the striker can't hit the target with his header! Not a whole lot Ederson could have done there.
37' City didn't like how quickly they were exposed by Shakhtar there, perhaps taken by surprise a bit with the pace the visitors pack on the break. They have slowed the match down now, adopting a more patient approach in possession, but it doesn't seem to be doing much for them.
35' End to end stuff! That's more like it from Sane, who pops up on the right flank here, cutting inside onto his left and driving an effort at goal that Pyatov is able to smother. Back the other way come Shakhtar, and Marlos forces Ederson to dive out and parry a low cross, which he does rather unconvincingly.
33' Despite squandering that chance, City needed an opening like that to inject a bit of confidence back into their attack. They need their playmakers to get more involved, with De Bruyne, Silva and Sane awfully quiet up to this point.
31' BIG MISS! That's the opening City have been working so hard to create! Jesus leads the charge as the hosts break in numbers, before playing De Bruyne through to his left, but the Belgian sends his effort wide of the near post! He has to be testing Pyatov from there.
29' STAT: Manchester City have never won their opening two games of a Champions League campaign.
27' Bernard is proving a central figure in these early stages. He's been the catalyst for the visitors on the break, and his tracking back has also proved vital. He does well to track Walker here, and then quickly peel off his man to make himself an outlet for Ismaily to pass out from the back, before winning a free kick to relieve the pressure.
25' Possession is starting to tilt in the favour of City, but it's what they're doing with it - or not doing with it, rather - that will be of greater concern for Pep Guardiola. Shakhtar have been completely untroubled in defence, staying organised and keeping the hosts to the periphery.
23' City getting a bit frustrated here as their patience is starting to wear thin. They're so keen on testing Pyatov that these strikers are starting to get the happy feet as they dance in behind the defence before the passes are coming in, and it results in another offside here, this one on Jesus.
21' City's attacking presence has been limited at best through 20 minutes. Aguero gets on the end of what would be just their second real threatening move of the night, forcing a save from Pyatov, but it won't count anyhow as the flag is rightfully raised for offside.
19' STAT: None of Manchester City’s 37 Champions League group games have ended goalless.
17' There's an absolutely outstanding atmosphere inside the Etihad tonight, a venue not always know for it's boisterous crowds. These City fans are in full voice early on, and the slew of travelling supporters from Ukraine are doing their part to contribute.
15' Well City are coming under a bit of pressure still as Shakhtar remain in the ascendency. The visitors boast a ton of attacking talent and are out tonight to prove their opening match victory over Napoli was no fluke.
13' Shakhtar are very much in this game, not backing down at all in the face of the high-flying opponents. They are keen to push the pace just as much in possession, and have actually spent just over 50 per cent of the match thus far on the ball - very even here through 13 minutes.
11' GREAT OPENING! Well that's the sort of threat Shakhtar can pose, if City aren't diligent in their defending. A lovely passing move atop the area sees Fred played through on goal, but he's put under just enough pressure from Stones as he has to settle for a corner.
9' STAT: This is Manchester City’s seventh consecutive Champions League participation. They have made it past the round of 16 only once, it was in 2015/16 when they reached the semi-finals (knocked out by Real Madrid).
7' NEARLY THE OPENER! Gabriel is played through by an errant Rakitskiy tackle, and the striker picks out a terrific ball across for David Silva. The Spaniard has time and space, but gets his first touch all wrong, awkwardly sending the ball behind for a goal-kick.
5' City turn on the style now as they win the ball back and immediately look to get on the front foot. There's a real buzz about the hosts this evening, and it hardly comes as much of a surprise considering the form they're in.
3' Plenty of possession for Shakhtar in these early stages, but nothing remotely threatening as their main focus for the time being is attempting to cope with City's high press. There's a good energy about the hosts early on, and a great one in and around the stadium.
1' AND THEY'RE OFF! Shakhtar get us underway on a cold night in Manchester, attacking right to left.
Paulo Fonseca is forced into making a change, and that's all he makes to his side from their 2-1 win over Napoli on matchday one. Skipper Dario Srna is unavailable after testing positive for a banned substance, replaced in the side by Bohdan Butko - a big blow for the Ukrainian outfit.
Pep Guardiola makes two changes from their opening Champions League match, a 4-0 victory in Rotterdam. Benjamin Mendy is injured, prompting a change in formation as Fernandinho drops deep to play centre-half, with Leroy Sane replacing Mendy at wing-back. Fabian Delph is also brought in to provide some steel in midfield, at the expense of Bernardo Silva.
SUBS: Khotcholava, Dentinho, Alan, Shevchenko, Petryak, Azevedo, Kovalenko.
SHAKHTAR (4-2-3-1): Pyatov; Butko, Ordets, Rakitskiy, Ismaily; Fred, Stepanenko; Marlos, Taison, Bernard; Ferreyra.
SUBS: Bravo, Sterling, Gundogan, Mangala, B. Silva, Toure, Danilo.
MANCHESTER CITY (3-4-3): Ederson; Stones, Fernandinho, Otamendi; Walker, De Bruyne, Delph, Sane; D. Silva, Jesus, Aguero.
The pressure is off them tonight being heavy underdogs, which will allow Paulo Fonseca’s men to come in and play freely, with any sort of result a bonus for them ahead of two massive ties with Feyenoord looming in October – games they must win to have a legitimate claim at a spot in the knockout stage.
Shakhtar impressed in their Champions League opener as well, stunning Serie A leaders Napoli 2-1 in Ukraine, a result that gives them an early lead in their fight for top-two in Group F.
There is little not to like about Pep Guardiola’s side in their current form, having won six in a row across all competitions, including a pair of 5-0 victories in their last two matches at the Etihad – not to mention their 4-0 and 6-0 successes over Feyenoord and Watford on their travels.
Premier League leaders Manchester City opened their campaign with a resounding 4-0 victory over Feyenoord in Rotterdam, and can put a stranglehold on Group F should they manage another three points tonight under the bright Manchester lights.
