Minute   Description
Liverpool came into this tie tonight needing a point to secure their status as winners, but instead they walk away with a 7-0 victory after an utterly devastating, irresistable attacking display. Spartak never truly threatened to recover from the half-time deficit and Liverpool took the opportunity to put the result well beyond any doubt. A quickfire double early in the second half from Sadio Mane's volley and Philippe Coutinho's third of the night set the tone for the second half, before Mane then did well to pull Sturridge's pass from behind him inside the box and fire home. Salah added gloss to an already glossy scoreline when he brought down Milner's cross to fire home the seventh, giving Milner his hat-trick of assists as a substitute. Spartak fought well and did not go down without a fire, but in the end Liverpool just had far too much for them and Klopp's men join Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur in the last-16.
FULL-TIME: LIVERPOOL 7-0 SPARTAK MOSCOW.
90' Liverpool cut through Spartak once again and Sturridge tries to kick the ball over his own head, which is cleared for a corner. Liverpool have no time to take it as the referee blows his whistle to signal the end of Spartak's misery.
88' Liverpool continue to try and find another goal despite their incredible lead. This game has long since been over but Klopp's men are thoroughly enjoying themselves tonight and they are showing it.
86' James Milner crosses from the left wing to this time set up Salah, who turns the defenders before firing into the right of the net.
GOAL! Mohamed Salah finally gets the goal after an excellent performance this evening and Milner gets his third assist since coming on as a substitute. The cross from the left wing towards the back post is brought down by Salah, who turns onto his right foot and away from the rushing defenders before firing the ball into the right of the net to send Anfield wild.
84' Liverpool carve Spartak open again. Mane's cheeky pass plays Alexander-Arnold into space inside the box. The defender plays it towards Sturridge at the front post, who can only fire high over the crossbar while under pressure from Selikhov in the Spartak goal.
83' Coutinho plays his part in the defensive work to prevent Spartak finding their way beyond the Liverpool defence down the right wing. The Brazilian earns a free-kick for his troubles too.
80' Melgarejo tries his luck from range outside the left of the box. It has plenty of power on it but it flies slightly wide of the left post with Karius seemingly well beaten.
78' Liverpool have found a renewed energy after Mane's goal and they are starting to turn up the heat against this tiring Spartak side. This could get much uglier for the Russians.
76' Daniel Sturridge opts to selfessly play the ball to Sane, who pokes home for Liverpool's sixth.
GOAL! Sadio Mane makes it six and yet another swift attacking move from Jurgen Klopp's side. Salah played the ball into the right of the box before Sturridge rolled it towards the Senegal international. It looked to be a little too far behind the winger but he managed to hang his foot back before poking it into the back of the net. Great goal and Liverpool have been utterly dominant.
75' Spartak's biggest threat this evening is off, as Quincy Promes is replaced by Aleksandr Samedov.
74' Spartak enjoying a little bit of possession and Liverpool are pegged back for the moment. The cross from the left is cleared by the Liverpool defenders but it only drops as far as Promes. The attacking midfielder takes one touch before firing a swerving effort towards the left post, which just narrowly flies wide.
72' Roberto Firmino is off after an excellent evening. Daniel Sturridge replaces him.
69' The game has died down a bit now as LIverpool are looking comfortable. Spartak are showing great spirit to continue fighting and pushing but they are totally second best.
66' Pasalic shows a lovely turn on the ball before unleashing a right-footed effort from outside the Liverpool box. He just gets a little too much on it though and it rises high over the crossbar.
65' Spartak caught out on midfield and Firmino can come forward. He stands up the defender inside the box but opts to try and find a teammate instead of shooting, but the Spartak players get back in numbers to snuff out the danger.
62' Fernando is booked for a foul on Milner.
61' Salah almost adds gloss to the scoreline, showing excellent footwork inside the Spartak box before firing a low curling effort towards the left corner. Selikhov has to stretch to parry it wide for a corner, which comes to nothing.
60' Dejan Lovren's night is up, with Klopp having one eye on the Merseyside derby at the weekend. Trent Alexander-Arnold replaces him.
Georgiy Dzhikiya comes off injured. Mario Pašalić replaces him.
57' Spartak clear their lines but they are chasing shadows at the moment. Liverpool are enjoying all the possession at the moment and are brimming with confidence now, shown with the neat little flicks and interchanges between the players.
54' Liverpool continue to come forward and look for more goals. Coutinho play a quick one-two outside the Spartak box with Salah, but the return pass hits the hand of the Egyptian and Spartak can bring themselves a quick breather.
51' Ze Luís is replaced by Lorenzo Melgarejo.
50' James Milner sets up the goal again, this time slotting a pass into the box to allow Coutinho to fire in Liverpools fifth.
GOAL! Philippe Coutinho has his hat-trick and surely that's game over for Spartak. It is great link up play again for Liverpool. Milner rolls the ball into the box for Coutinho to shoot. His left-footed effort takes a wicked deflection off a defender before bouncing into the bottom-left corner of the goal.
47' James Milner gets involved in the attack straight away in this second half, crossing for Mane to volley home Liverpool's fourth goal.
GOAL! And what a goal it was. Coutinho runs towards the Spartak box, drawing two defenders towards him before rolling the ball wide to Milner on the left wing. He crosses first time on his weaker foot towards the back post, where Mane is there to acrobatically power home a volley into the back of the net. No chance for Selikhov and any fear of a Sevilla repeat will be vanquished with that goal.
46' We're back underway! Spartak have it all to do if they are to have any hope of progressing into the knockout stage.
The players of both sides are coming back out onto the pitch, ahead of the start of the second half.
A blistering attacking display in the opening 20 minutes from Liverpool have put them in prime position to secure their progress as Group E winners. Coutinho opened the scoring after Jikia brought Salah inside the penalty box, before the Brazilian rolled in Firmino's pass after some brilliant one touch passing carved open the Spartak defence. Firmino then turned scorer as he fired the ball into the left corner on the half-volley after the initial cross aimed at him was blocked. Spartak grew into the game as the half progressed but they haven't looked like scoring yet. The only downside for Jurgen Klopp will be the loss of defender Alberto Moreno to injury.
HALF-TIME: LIVERPOOL 3-0 SPARTAK MOSCOW.
45'+1 Alberto Moreno goes off injured as James Milner replaces him.
44' Moreno's evening looks to be over. He hobbled off injured after blocking one of the flurry of efforts from Spartak a few minutes ago. He tried to play on but it proved to be worse than he thought.
41' A flurry of half chances as Spartak try to force the issue. Klavan played his part in blocking one of three shots before Liverpool finally clear their lines. That was the best sustained attack the away side have shown in this half and they will certainly need more of the same if they are to find a way back into the game.
38' Spartak are squashing out the spaces Liverpool have seen so much of so far in this game. The ball is played to Salah who has to use his awareness to turn his marker and find space on the edge of the box. He has three defenders ahead of him but his curling effort still finds a way beyond them, but unfortunately beyond the left post as well.
35' Promes shows his ability again with a curling effort from the left of the box. Karius dives low to smother it though. Straight away Liverpool race up the other end. Mane looks through on goal but can only see his shot fly high over the crossbar.
33' Spartak with a bit of controlled possession for the first time in the game. They look to be carving an opening through the Liverpool defence but Wijnaldum sticks a toe out to intercept the pass and clear the danger.
30' The corner causes a bit of havoc in the Liverpool box but it is eventually cleared away from danger. Spartak are starting to sense a little vulnerability in this Liverpool side and are pushing bodies forward.
29' Spartak earn the first corner of the game. A pass is slotted straight through the Liverpool midfield and Promes has space to run at the Liverpool defence and get his shot away, which is blocked out of play.
28' Liverpool forward again. Mane draws three defenders to him on the edge of the box before slotting the ball to Salah in a bit of space inside the box. The Egyptian forward tries to roll it into the bottom right corner but it lacks the power to trouble Selikhov.
25' Liverpool come forward on the counter with the pace of Salah forcing the Spartak backline into chaos. He rolls it to the left of the box for Coutinho to slot home but Adriano races back in time to prevent the shot.
23' Klavan's excellent cross field pass finds Mane on the right of the box. He tries to pull it back for the run of Coutinho but this time a Spartak defender is wise to the danger and hammers it clear.
21' Still all Liverpool. Spartak are struggling the contend with the raw pace in this Liverpool attacking line up. Klopp's men look likely to score every time they come forward.
18' GOAL! The ball deflects off the heel of Jikia to allow Mane charge towards the Spartak defence. He chips it in towards Roberto Firmino and it takes a fortunate deflection off a defender, before the Brazilian forward is able to latch onto the ball at the second attempt, firing his half-volley into the left corner. Liverpool are in dreamland.
Liverpool are well in the ascendancy at the moment, but it is worth noting they had a 3-0 half-time lead against Sevilla...
15' Roberto Firmino finishes the passing move between himself and Salah to allow Coutinho to roll the ball into the bottom right corner.
GOAL! Great team play once again from Liverpool and this time Philippe Coutinho slots it into the bottom right corner from the left of the box. Sadio Mane set the attack off before some one touch passing between Firmino and Salah completely unlocked the Spartak defence, leaving Coutinho in acres of space to roll the ball home.
Some clever link up play between the Liverpool attackers drops to Coutinho outside the box, who tries to curl an effort into the top right corner. Selikhov reads it all the way and claims it comfortably.
14' Spartak do finally find a way forward, but Adriano's low effort from the edge of the box is an easy save in the end for Karius.
12' Spartak are struggling to build any momentum at the moment. Liverpool are dominating the midfield and pressing quickly, but are just lacking the cutting edge in the final third to find that killer pass.
10' A dinked pass from Coutinho is over the top of the Spartak defence. Mane chases it to the byline and tries to fire it goalwards, but it hits the side netting. His teammates will be a little frustrated as there were two players on the line of the six yard box waiting for the tap in.
9' That goal has settled any possible nerves the home side may have been feeling. They're playing with swagger and are looking up for taking the game to Spartak and ensuring they win.
6' Emre Can is booked for a late sliding challenge on Ze Luis.
4' GOAL! Philippe Coutinho staggers his run up before placing the penalty straight into the bottom right corner, with Alexander Selkihov diving the other way.
Georgiy Dzhikiya is booked for pulling down Salah inside the penalty box.
PENALTY! Giorgi Jikia brings down Salah in the box. Liverpool have the chance to settle their nerves early on...
3' Spartak are trying to push up the pitch with pace as soon as they get the ball here. They do need a win to qualify and they are certainly showing that in these opening exchanges.
1' We're underway! Spartak kick us off, starting left to right.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
Spartak Moscow also ring the changes from the side that beat FC Arsenal Tula in the Russian Premier League at the weekend. Ilya Kutepov is dropped to the bench, as Serdar Tasci comes in to partner Salvatore Bocchetti in defence. Fernando will line up alongside Denis Glushakov as the two holding midfielders, while Roman Zobnin and Quincy Promes replace Pedro Rocha and Lorenzo Melgarejo in midfield. Luiz Adriano will play in the number 10 role as Ze Luis takes his place as the lone striker, replacing Aleksandr Samedov.
Jurgen Klopp makes five changes from the Liverpool side that beat Brighton & Hove Albion 5-1 at the weekend, with the return of Joe Gomez and Ragnar Klavan allowing Georginio Wijnaldum and Emre Can to return to their duties in midfield. Loris Karius replaces Simon Mignolet in goal while Alberto Moreno takes his place at left-back. Sadio Mane returns to the side to partner Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino in a front three.
Spartak Moscow Substitutes: Melgarejo, Rocha, Samedov, Pasalic, Popov, Rebrov, Kutepov.
Spartak Moscow XI (4-2-3-1): Selikhov; Eschchenko, Tasci, Bocchetti, Jikia; Glushakov, Fernando; Zobnin, Adriano, Promes; Ze Luis.
Liverpool Substitutes: Sturridge, Henderson, Mignolet, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Solanke, Alexander-Arnold, Milner.
Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Karius; Gomez, Klavan, Lovren, Moreno; Wijnaldum, Can, Coutinho; Salah, Firmino, Mane.
There’s just over 15 minutes left to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this afternoon…
Manager Massimo Carrera will be boosted by the return of defender Giorgi Jikia from suspension for tonight’s make or break tie, although left-back Georgi Tigiev remains out with a ruptured cruciate ligament injury. Tigiev will be joined on the sidelines by midfielders Dmitri Kombarov, Artem Timofeev and attacking midfielder Jano Ananidze.
Liverpool may have the luxury of affording a draw or even a loss if the other result goes their way, but that is not a luxury Spartak Moscow can afford themselves. The Russian club sit third in their group and must leave Anfield tonight with all three points if they are to progress into the latter stages of the Champions League, a feat they have only managed once in their history, when they reached the quarter-finals in the 1995/96 season.
Klopp will welcome the return of defenders Ragnar Klavan and Joe Gomez after they recovered from the illness that forced them to miss the weekend fixture against Brighton & Hove Albion. The German manager was forced to field a makeshift back-three that featured attacking midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum and Emre Can. However, Liverpool will still be missing defenders Joel Matip, Nathaniel Clyne and midfielder Adam Lallana for the visit of Spartak.
It is all to play for in Group E this evening, with Liverpool and tonight’s opponents Spartak Moscow joining Sevilla in contending for a place in the knockout stages of the competition. The Merseysiders would progress into the last-16 with a draw here but Jurgen Klopp is expected to put forward a strong side to ensure there are no slip ups. Qualification tonight for the Reds would not only be the first time five English clubs have progressed to the knockout stages, it would also be the first time Liverpool have featured in the last-16 round since the 2008/09 season.
Good evening and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s Champions League group stage game between Liverpool and Spartak Moscow at Anfield.
