Minute   Description
What a start to the new season for Manchester United, who were comfortably on top from start to finish. They never looked back after making it 2-0, and from then onwards they were all over West Ham. The visitors seemed to totally collapse, allowing far too much space to open up in and around their own penalty area.
FULL-TIME: MANCHESTER UNITED 4-0 WEST HAM UNITED
90'+2 Hernandez, who has tried really hard today, dances his way through a group of red shirts and then shoots, but there's slightly too much power behind his strike and it sails a few yards over the top of the crossbar.
90' The fourth official has indicated that there will be three minutes of added time.
Martial linked up nicely with Pogba, but, once again, West Ham's defence were all over the place. They seem to have completely given up, and plenty of space is opening up for the home side.
GOAL! Manchester United aren't done just yet! Martial knocks the ball over to Pogba and sets up the midfielder to shoot, and that's exactly what he does. He takes a quick touch and beats Hart with a wonderful low shot that curls past the outstretched limbs of Hart.
89' West Ham push forward from the restart and initially cause some problems for the United back line as Hernandez penetrates the penalty area. Cresswell then manages to shoot, but his effort is well blocked at the near post.
88' Mkhitaryan has made way for Jesse Lingard in a late change for Manchester United.
87' That was a really great pass from Mkhitaryan. The Armenian has looked in fine form today and picked out Martial with a perfect ball into the box.
GOAL! It's 3-0! Mkhitaryan spins in the middle of the pitch and knocks a lovely pass past Zabaleta and into the path of Martial, who only has Hart to beat and does so comfortably with a great low strike.
86' Lukaku turns provider this time as he floats a lovely pass into the penalty area and towards Pogba, but the Frenchman is closed down quickly and can't get a shot away from close range.
85' Pogba and Matic link up really well midway inside the West Ham half of the pitch before the latter tries to thread a through-ball into the path of Lukaku. It's slightly overhit though, allowing Hart to rush out and deal with the danger.
83' Martial embarks on another good run as he tries to carve out a late chance on goal for the home side, but this time Zabaleta is able to stick to him before shepherding the ball behind for a goal-kick.
82' Martial does really well to get the better of Zabaleta before floating a lovely cross into the heart of the penalty area, but it sails just past the outstretched boot of Lukaku, who was left in a dangerous position by the West Ham defence.
81' Meanwhile, West Ham have replaced Masuaku with Aaron Cresswell.
80' Anthony Martial comes on to replace Rashford for the final 10 minutes of the game.
79' Arnautovic is set up deep down the right wing as West Ham try to push forward once again, but he ends up fouling Jones as they battle for the ball and the home side pick up a free-kick.
77' It hasn't been a great debut for Arnautovic, who has drifted in and out of the game. He's presented with a good chance to shoot from the right-hand side of the Manchester United box and quickly does so, but his thumping strike is far too powerful and fails to trouble De Gea.
76' Mata receives a rousing round of applause from the home fans as he's replaced by Marouane Fellaini.
75' Space opens up for Lukaku and allows him to get a shot away from 25 yards out, but it isn't hit particularly well by the Belgian and sails high over the top of the crossbar.
73' Rashford darts down the left wing and gets the better of Zabaleta before taking on Reid. He's not quite able to get the better of the centre-back and has to settle for a corner that is poor and fails to result in a chance on goal.
71' Thumping strike from Blind! Valencia charges down the right wing on a great run before curling a deep cross over to the far post. Blind charges onto it and unleashes a rocket of a volley down into the ground, but it bounces just a yard or so over the top of the crossbar.
70' Pogba initially seems to get the better of Zabaleta as he dances his way into the West Ham box, but the referee spots a pull on the Argentine's shirt from the midfielder and quickly awards the visitors a free-kick.
68' Rice and Henandez link up well deep down the right flank before the latter swings an excellent cross into the heart of the penalty area. It looks set to find Sakho in front of goal, but Bailly does really well to get a head on the ball.
66' Ogbonna caught Mkhitaryan with a late challenge during the build-up to that last attacking move and receives a yellow card as soon as the ball goes out of play.
65' Rashford hits the post! The youngster cuts onto his right foot and unleashes an excellent strike from the edge of the penalty area that easily beats Hart, but it smashes off the woodwork and denies him Manchester United's third goal.
63' Mkhitaryan bursts down the left wing on a purposeful run before cutting inside and shooting from 25 yards out, but his low effort is slightly too near to Hart and is well saved by the West Ham goalkeeper.
62' Two great opportunities for Manchester United! Lukaku is set up with a chance to wrap up his hat-trick with a thumping strike from inside the box, but Zabaleta throws his body in the way of the effort and does really well to block it. It then rolls back out to Pogba, who quickly shoots but sees his strike get deflected behind for a corner.
61' Huge chance for Sakho! The striker is immediately involved in the thick of the action as he latches on to a corner from the right flank, but he can't make decent contact with the ball and fails to trouble De Gea.
60' And the second is youngster Declan Rice, with Noble making way.
With 30 minutes left to play, West Ham decided to make a double substitution. The first player to come on is Diafra Sakho, who replaces Fernandes.
Arnautovic holds up the ball over on the left wing and tries to get the better of Valencia, but he's caught by a late challenge from the Ecuadorian and the referee's yellow card is out once again.
58' Arnautovic hits the crossbar! A great cross from Fernandes loops into the heart of the Manchester United penalty area and finds Arnautovic, who rises high and meets the ball well before sending a header onto the top of the crossbar.
56' Mkhitaryan scores, but it's ruled out! A really nice piece of play from the home side sets up Rashford to square the ball over to Mkhitaryan, but as soon as the Armenian seems to make it 3-0, the linesman's flag is rightly raised.
54' Manchester United have started the second half the way they finished the first. They're comfortably holding onto possession inside the West Ham half of the pitch and are making life really difficult for the visitors.
52' Mkhitaryan did really well to pick out Lukaku with his cross, but the West Ham defence really should have done much better. Masuaku got the wrong side of the big Belgian and let himself be bullied.
GOAL! It's another for Lukaku! The resulting free-kick is floated in by Mkhitaryan and finds Lukaku, who rises high above Masuaku and easily beats the defender before sending a downward header into the bottom right-hand corner of the net.
51' A Masuaku cross is easily stopped by De Gea, allowing Manchester United to counter quickly. Rashford charges down the left wing and takes on Zabaleta, who cynically fouls the forward and receives a booking as a result.
49' Rashford almost makes it 2-0! A beautiful pass is sent into the left-hand side of the West Ham penalty area and straight to Rashford, but the youngster can't hit the target with his side-footed effort and instead sends it a few yards wide of the far post.
47' Rashford catches Zabaleta over on the right flank, resulting in a free-kick for West Ham in a dangerous position. It's sent in well by Arnautovic, but Bailly is there to deal with the danger at the near post.
46' We're underway once again!
The two teams are making their way back out on to the pitch ahead of the start of the second half. Neither side have made any substitutions during the half-time break.
So far, so good for the home side, who head into the break with a well-deserved one-goal lead thanks to a first goal in a red shirt for Lukaku. West Ham have really struggled to cause many problems for the hosts, who have put their opponents under plenty of pressure with impressive pressing all over the pitch. Manchester United's front line have looked really dangerous, and it's caused some real problems for the Hammers' defence.
HALF-TME: MANCHESTER UNITED 1-0 WEST HAM UNITED
45'+2 Edimilson Fernandes goes close! Really good play by West Ham sees Ayew tee up Fernandes on the edge of the penalty area. The Swiss midfielder quickly unleashes a shot, but his bouncing effort takes a deflection off Bailly that makes it easily for De Gea to save.
45'+1 Almost a late opportunity for Rashford! Space opens up in the middle of the pitch and presents Pogba with a great chance to set up Rashford, but his through-ball into the box is slightly overhit and rolls straight into the hands of Hart.
45' The fourth official has indicated that there will be just one minute of added time.
44' Manchester United work the ball around nicely deep inside the West Ham half of the pitch before Antonio Valencia tries to take on Arnautovic, but it's the Austrian who comes out on top and does well to win his side a goal-kick.
43' Once again, Hernandez picks up the ball before trying to spin and find a team-mate, but he's clattered into by Bailly and the centre-back ends up receiving the first yellow card of the game.
42' West Ham are starting to see more of the ball as Manchester United start to sit a little deeper, but they're struggling to do much with it. Hernandez is dropping deep to pick up possession, but he's being well closed down by red shirts every time he does so.
40' Arnautovic is presented with one of his first chances to whip a cross into the hosts' penalty area from the left flank, but it's well met by Blind and the Dutchman manages to nod the ball away from danger before it can find a black shirt.
39' Matic showcases wonderful skills as he bursts down the right flank on an excellent run. He beats two players and then tries to set up Mata, but Ogbonna is there to get a foot on the ball.
38' A dangerous cross from Blind can only find Zabaleta, who heads the ball behind for a corner. It's fired into the box and towards Bailly, who rises high but can't make decent contact with the cross in a dangerous position.
37' A lofted pass is fired up to the Manchester United penalty area and finds Hernandez, who quickly nods it down to Noble. The captain shoots from 25 yards out, but his effort loops several yards over the top of the crossbar.
35' Manchester United quickly win the ball back and burst forward through Pogba. The Frenchman beats one player on the edge of the visitors' box before taking on Obiang, who brings the midfielder down from behind but wins the ball fairly.
33' That was a lovely pass from Rashford to set up the big Belgian, but Matic did brilliantly in the build-up. He quickly closed down Obiang and made sure the Spaniard had no time whatsoever on the ball.
GOAL! Lukaku fires Manchester United into the lead! Obiang falls asleep on the ball in the middle of the pitch and is closed down by Matic, who quickly knocks the ball over to Rashford. The youngster flies towards the penalty area and then tees up Lukaku, who smashes a thumping strike past Hart and into the back of the net off the inside of the near post.
32' Another free-kick is given away by Pogba, this time for a foul on Obiang. It's sent short and eventually worked over to Ogbonna, whose long ball forward isn't controlled well enough by Arnautovic over on the left wing.
30' Masuaku breaks down the left flank before being tripped over by Pogba, presenting West Ham with a great chance to whip the ball into the box. The free-kick is poorly hit, however, and it fails to beat the first man on the edge of the penalty area.
28' The first Manchester United corner quickly results in a second, which is then headed behind for a third. This time, the home side send it short before a deep cross is swung over to the far post, where Joe Hart is just about able to get a hand on the ball ahead of Lukaku.
27' So close from Mata! Pogba chips an absolutely beautiful pass over the West Ham back line and towards Mata, who makes a great run into the box. The Spaniard then tries to square the ball over to Lukaku, but Ogbonna is there to cut out the danger.
25' Rashford twists and turns on the left-hand side of the West Ham penalty area before finally getting a shot away, but he's well marshalled and has to settle for a corner. The set-piece fails to pick out a red shirt and sails over to Hernandez, who is then dispossessed by a crunching tackle from Jones.
23' Arnautovic, who has had very few chances to impress with the ball at his feet, breaks through the Manchester United defence and latches onto a clever pass, but his run is mistimed and the linesman's flag is quickly raised.
22' A swinging cross from Rashford is met by Winston Reid, but the defender can't make decent contact with the ball and knees it behind for another Manchester United corner. It's fired in low by Blind and finds Bailly, but the centre-back's first-time effort bounces comfortably wide of the near post.
20' After a period on the back foot, West Ham are able to push forward on a quick counter-attack. Noble chips a clever pass into the box and over to Hernandez, who quickly unleashes a volleyed cross but can't pick out Andre Ayew.
18' Goalmouth scramble! Noble gives away a free-kick in the middle of the pitch, and it's quickly taken by a determined Manchester United side. Mata darts into the penalty area and then tees up Lukaku in front of goal, but, under pressure, the Belgian can't get the ball out of his feet and is eventually dispossessed.
16' Another Manchester United attack down the right flank results in a corner for the hosts. It's half dealt with by the West Ham defence and cleared only as far as Daley Blind, who quickly shoots but sends a mishit strike comfortably wide of the near post.
15' Nemanja Matic launches a wonderful lofted pass over the West Ham back line and over to Mkhitaryan, who then wins another corner for his side. It's whipped into the box and towards Lukaku, but Zabaleta is there to clear the danger.
14' Masuaku is beaten once again, this time by Mata, and allows the Spaniard to skip towards the penalty area. He then cuts a pass back to Rashford, who tries to shoot but is quickly closed down and dispossessed by Mark Noble.
12' Early chance for Mkhitaryan! A deep cross over to the far post isn't fully dealt with by the West Ham defence, allowing Mkhitaryan to latch onto a mistake from Masuaku. The Armenian quickly shoots, but his effort is poor and sails high over the top of the crossbar.
11' Paul Pogba easily gets the better of Arthur Masuaku out wide and then fires a great low cross towards the near post. It looks set to find Mata, but Angelo Ogbonna throws his body in the way to make sure it can't.
9' Javier Hernandez battles hard with Phil Jones deep down the right flank, but it's the the defender who comes out on top. Pablo Zabaleta is then able to float a cross into the box, where it's easily caught by David De Gea.
7' West Ham leave a few spaces open at the back, allowing Romelu Lukaku to power into the box and win a first corner of the game for his side. It's swung into the penalty area and back towards the Belgian, but it flies just over his head after taking a slight touch off Eric Bailly.
5' A slightly sloppy pass from Marcus Rashford can't find Juan Mata and allows West Ham to counter quickly, but the home side are quickly able to get plenty of bodies back to comfortably deal with the danger.
3' After an even start to the game from both sides, Henrikh Mkhitaryan flies down the left wing on an early run. He then tries to cut into the penalty area, but Pedro Obiang does well to block the Armenian's path.
1' We're off! Manchester United get us underway, attacking from right to left.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
As for West Ham, Slaven Bilic has decided to hand debuts to Joe Hart, Pablo Zabaleta, Marko Arnautovic and Javier Hernandez, the latter of whom spent five years here as a Manchester United player. Hart and Zabaleta both joined from Manchester City and would surely love to get one over the Red Devils this afternoon.
There aren’t too many surprises in the side Jose Mourinho’s picked today. As expected, Romelu Lukaku leads the line and Nemanja Matic will feature in the heart of the Manchester United midfield, whilst Daley Blind has been preferred to Matteo Darmian, who started in the Super Cup on Tuesday, at left-back.
West Ham United substitutes: Adrian, Byram, Cresswell, Fonte, Collins, Rice, Sakho.
West Ham United XI (4-3-3): Hart; Zabaleta, Reid, Ogbonna, Masuaku; Noble, Obiang, Fernandes; Ayew, Hernandez, Arnautovic.
Manchester United substitutes: Romero, Smalling, Darmian, Fellaini, Herrera, Martial, Lingard.
Manchester United XI (4-3-3): De Gea; Valencia, Bailly, Jones, Blind; Mata, Matic, Pogba; Mkhitaryan, Lukaku, Rashford.
There’s just over 15 minutes left to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this afternoon…
Two goals each for Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Anthony Martial helped Manchester United come away with a comfortable 4-1 win in the last meeting between the two sides at Old Trafford, and it’s now over 10 years since West Ham last tasted victory here. They did manage to hold the Red Devils to a 1-1 draw in the league, however, only for Mourinho’s men to win 2-0 at the London Stadium back in January.
The most notable new faces in the West Ham ranks are Marko Arnautovic and former Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez, both of whom are in today’s starting line-up. The latter is a proven goalscorer and was a steal at only £16m, whilst Arnautovic was consistently one of Stoke City’s standout performers during his four years with the Potters.
Last season’s debut campaign in the London Stadium wasn’t the happiest of years for West Ham, who have struggled to get to grips with their new surroundings. A series of disappointing results led many to believe that Slaven Bilic would get the axe over the summer, but the club’s owners have not only decided to stick with the Croatian but have also spent just shy of £40m on new players for him.
In order to achieve this, the 20-time top-tier champions have invested heavily over the summer, with around £140m being splashed to bring in Victor Lindelof, Nemanja Matic and, most notably, Romelu Lukaku. The latter two are set to start today, and most eyes in the stadium will be on the club’s star striker as he goes in search of his first league goal for the Red Devils.
Another year, another desperate push for the upper echelons of the Premier League table for Manchester United. After sacrificing their domestic aspirations for the Europa League last season, Jose Mourinho will be well aware that his big spending side simply must do better than the sixth-place finish they managed in the Portuguese boss’ first campaign in charge.
Good afternoon and welcome to our live text commentary of today's Premier League game between Manchester United and West Ham United at Old Trafford.
