73' A. Griezmann (G)

Minute   Description
FULL-TIME! Griezmann's 100th LaLiga goal was enough to help Atletico defeat Espanyol 1-0 away from home, giving Simeone's men a much-needed three points in the race for third place. The hosts will feel aggrieved that they couldn't have clawed back a point, but the visitors do what they do best and grind out a tight result. That's all that we have time for, we hope to see you again next time.
90'+2 Victor Sanchez gets a late booking for losing his temper completely. After having a foul given against him, the Espanyol captain slams the ball down, before angrily shouting at the referee.
90' There are two minutes of stoppage time in Cornella.
88' Griezmann bursts forward at great speed, skipping past opponents and getting to the edge of the area with relative ease. He chooses to ignore the options around him and take a shot from long-range, but his effort sails a long way wide of the target.
86' Baptistao races into space on the edge of the box, before unleashing a 25-yard effort straight at Oblak, with Gerard Moreno stood in the penalty area with his hands aloft, wondering what exactly his teammate was thinking of trying to beat the goalkeeper from there.
84' Atletico try and keep hold of possession to settle themselves back down, as Espanyol's willingness to push on has upped the tempo of the game and opened up plenty of spaces. Griezmann tries to slot a neat through ball into the path of Gameiro, but Diego Reyes makes a timely intervention on the edge of his own box.
82' Marc Navarro makes his return from injury at right-back, with Javi Lopez jogging off.
Jose Antonio Reyes comes into the game in place of Jurado on the right-hand side.
81' This game is getting stretched for the first time now, with Sanchez Flores needing to try and change things up to try and get a response from his team. They've been competitive, but they're just lacking that little bit of spark in the final third.
79' Just wide from Gerard Moreno! Espanyol win a corner on the right-hand side and it is whipped into the near-post zone dangerously. The hosts' striker gets up highest to flick a header over Oblak, who rushed out, but can only watch as the ball sails beyond the far post!
77' Atletico are suddenly much more spritely, with Gameiro's injection into the game really making a difference. Griezmann can drop a little deeper, with the former Sevilla striker leading the line and pressing. Espanyol have responded, however, and it appears that we're in for a grandstand finish.
75' Close for Baptistao! The Brazilian takes the ball down on his knee well, before bursting into the penalty area beyond Filipe Luis with a nutmeg, but a low finish from the Espanyol substitute thunders into Oblak's gut. It's a great one-on-one save from the Slovenian yet again!
73' GOOOOOOOOAL! GRIEZMANN MAKES IT 1-0! Filipe Luis whips a cross in from the left-hand side, which Espanyol hurriedly put behind for a corner. The visitors put the ball in the box, and a flick finds him in space. The Frenchman makes no mistake and fires home a lovely finish from a tight angle on the volley.
71' We're into the last 20 minutes in Catalonia, but an opener is looking unlikely. Gameiro tries to knock a through ball into space for the overlapping Partey to chase in behind, but Aaron Martin makes a vital interception. Suddenly, Atletico have awoken.
69' Simeone is trying to inject a bit of urgency into his side, with the Argentine boss hurrying to try and get the ball back into play as quickly as possible. The introduction of Gameiro has tipped the balance a little bit for Los Colchoneros. They win a free-kick high on the left flank, but the set-piece delivery is gobbled up simply by Diego Lopez.
67' Gameiro is giving Griezmann some much-needed company up top, as a change of shape in this second half hasn't really helped Atletico's cause. Espanyol have had plenty of possession as a result. The away side whip a corner in from the right, but the set-piece is easily headed to safety.
65' Gameiro is given the last 25 minutes to make himself a hero by Simeone, with Carrasco withdrawn.
63' Piatti picks up a yellow card for flying into a late challenge on Partey. That has been coming for a while. Moments earlier, Jurado had scampered through on goal brilliantly with a nice change of feet, but his shot was blocked.
62' Baptistao is introduced up top for the hosts, with Caicedo jogging off. The Brazilian will hope to score against his former employers.
61' Godin is picked out by a corner delivery from the right-hand side, but the Uruguayan centre-back can only plant a header shy of the far upright. Around half an hour remains, but it must be said that Espanyol look the more likely to push their noses in front at this point.
59' Atletico eventually have an attack of their own, but a poor delivery from the left is easily headed away. Espanyol are really on top, with the hosts trying to force their advantage to find a goal. Clear-cut chances are still low in supply, with organised defending coming out on top thus far.
57' Saul gets a yellow card for a very untidy challenge on Piatti.
56' Espanyol go close again, with Piatti drifting in at the back post to hook a volleyed effort back across goal and shy of the danger zone. The home fans are really getting behind their team now, as they seem to be able to smell blood. Atletico haven't responded since the restart.
54' Diego Lopez launches a poor kick upfield, but an improvised flick from Fuego gets the goalkeeper out of trouble. Espanyol attack down the left, with a cross from Piatti missed by Caicedo, before the rebound is picked up by the same winger and pummelled at goal! Two deflections take it behind for a corner, that comes to nothing.
52' Piatti drills in a cross from the left-hand side, with Godin able to clear easily at his near post. Espanyol open play out to the same flank moments later, but Partey tracks back well to deny Aaron Martin. The hosts have had the better of the early moments of this second half.
50' Piatti helps Espanyol to win the ball back in the opposition half, before toeing it forward to Caicedo. The Ecuadorian striker battles his way beyond one man, but a terrible touch robs him of the chance to open play out to the right-hand side.
48' Saul invites Griezmann forward with a through ball, but the Frenchman can then only scuff a low drive a long way wide of the mark. Moments later, Saul fails to test Diego Lopez after good work down the left from Filipe Luis.
46' Partey is introduced at half-time for Atletico, with Torres taking his leave after a disappointing first half.
We are back underway in the second half at Cornella! No goals so far, but there has been plenty of intent. If the final ball can be applied, Espanyol could do some damage to a potentially tired Atletico.
HALF-TIME! The two sides go in goalless at the break, in a very competitive game on the outskirts of Barcelona. Godin and Caicedo have had a real battle, with Gerard Moreno losing his cool too, with a midfield-heavy first half not resulting in too many chances. Still all to play for here!
44' Espanyol escape down the left-hand side yet again, but a cross from Aaron Martin sails straight out of play for a goal-kick. There was a lovely little flick from Javi Fuego in that move. Another case of the final ball letting the hosts down tonight.
42' There continue to be a lot of fouls in this game, with the referee doing well to have only dished out two cautions so far. A cross is whipped in from the right for Atletico, but an attempted volley from Torres is sliced terribly wide of the target.
40' Five minutes remain in the first half, with both teams still carefully probing each other's lines without wanting to push out too far. Both coaches will probably be happy to regroup with their players unscathed at the break.
38' Piatti escapes down the left flank and hangs up another dangerous cross towards the back post, after his delivery sails over Caicedo. Javi Lopez arrives from right-back to pick up the pieces, but the move comes to nothing after he whips a poor ball back into the box.
36' There is a brief stoppage in play as tempers flare, with Gimenez, Piatti and Gerard Moreno all involved in an argument. This game has been competitive and physical, with there not too much to pick between the two teams as of yet. The referee calms things down.
34' Only 10 minutes remain in the first half, but Diego Lopez and Oblak are yet to be forced into anything but routine saves. This has been a game of cheap fouls and a midfield battle, so far. The home fans have made plenty of noise, but to no avail.
32' The opening half an hour has been competitive, yet fairly low in entertainment value. Espanyol may well be happy to leave tonight with a point. The hosts break down the left, with a cross cut back from the byline, but Godin slides in to make a vital interception before Koke gets the ball half clear. Javi Fuego shoots from 25 yards out, but blasts into the crowd.
30' Caicedo gets the second booking, after diving in late for a tackle with Godin. They're both having a real battle out there.
28' Gimenez is forced to concede a corner after a dangerous cross was clipped into the Atletico penalty area, but the set-piece is taken short and then claimed by Oblak when it is eventually hurled into the danger zone.
27' Godin gets the first yellow card of the game for a high foot on Caicedo.
26' Espanyol are giving as good as they are getting, but clear-cut chances are proving tough to come by at both ends of the field. Caicedo is getting some rough treatment out there, with the Ecuador international continually brought down by Gimenez and Godin.
24' Safety-first defending has characterised the early stages of this game, but Jurado does well to use a piece of skill to dart into space in between the lines for Espanyol. The winger slides a low pass into Gerard Moreno, who opens his body up well before slamming a terrible effort horribly wide.
22' Sanchez Flores continues to be very animated on the touchline, as he knows that Atletico are well built for capitalising on any mistakes. Piatti and Moreno combine down the left-hand side for the hosts, but Savic stands up well to make a well-timed interception.
20' Atletico are enjoying a real spell of domination, with the hosts unable to get hold of the ball. Largely, however, it is in non-threatening areas of the field. As is always the case with Sanchez Flores teams, Espanyol are very good at funnelling their opponents into certain zones.
18' Filipe Luis has been very keen to push on down the left-hand side, but Savic has been very reserved in his early stages at right-back. Espanyol may want to target the former Man City defender, as he is definitely out of his comfort zone.
16' Atletico win themselves a free-kick in a deep area, but Gabi's delivery is headed on to Gimenez but into a harmless pocket of space. This is a very slow burner, with neither side wanting to make any risky decisions.
14' A few scrappy fouls have broken up the flow of this game, with neither side building notable attacks. Diego Lopez is tested by a shot from outside the area by Carrasco, with the Belgian using his right foot to strike powerfully across goal. He parries it initially to Torres, but then claims the cross that comes from the Spanish striker.
12' Gabi escapes a booking, after cynically kicking Piatti's knees together, but the free-kick awarded allows the hosts to load the box. The delivery is swung in, but Gimenez heads clear. Espanyol's front two are yet to really get in this game, Atletico are closing the space well in between the lines.
10' After a slow start, where they appeared to be feeling out their opposition, Espanyol have grown in confidence. There might just be a bit of tiredness in Atletico's legs after their European exploits in England midweek. Neither goalkeeper has been tested as this one settles down.
8' Savic gets away with an early penalty shout, as the Montenegrin defender nods a header onto his own arm inside the penalty box. The hosts claim for it, but the referee is unmoved. That could quite easily have been given the other way.
6' Espanyol are happy to sit deep and absorb pressure, before using the likes of Piatti and Jurado to hare upfield at pace. Gerard Moreno and Caicedo are the targets to bounce off, with it obvious that Sanchez Flores has told his defence to sit in deeper to invite their opponents on.
4' Awful from Jurado! Espanyol break down the left-hand side brilliantly, with Gerard Moreno coaxed to the byline. The hosts' forward takes his time to dig out a cross to the ex-Watford midfielder at the back post, but the Spaniard can only hammer a poor volleyed effort into the ground and watch it loop over the crossbar.
3' Torres is released in behind the Espanyol back four on the right-hand side, but the Spanish striker runs the ball out of play accidentally. Atletico enjoy all of the early possession, with a couple of hopeful deliveries into the penalty area not finding their intended targets.
1' We are underway in the first half in Cornella! Espanyol find themselves four points off a European finish, as it stands, with Atletico needing a win to push back ahead of Sevilla on more than just goal difference after Los Nervionenses victory over Granada on Friday evening. All to play for!
Atletico substitutes: Moya, Tiago, Correa, Lucas, Gameiro, Partey, Gaitan.
Atletico starting line-up (4-4-2): Oblak; Savic, Gimenez, Godin, Filipe Luis; Carrasco, Saul, Gabi, Koke; Torres, Griezmann.
Espanyol substitutes: Roberto, Ruben Duarte, Jose Antonio Reyes, Leo Baptistao, Diop, Marc Roca, Marc Navarro.
Espanyol starting line-up (4-4-2): Diego Lopez; Javi Lopez, David Lopez, Reyes, Aaron Martin; Jurado, Victor Sanchez, Javi Fuego, Piatti; Caicedo, Gerard Moreno.
TEAM NEWS: Kevin Gameiro is fit enough for the bench for Atletico, with Koke returning to the starting line-up after suspension. Yannick Carrasco is deployed out wide, likely on the right-hand side, to allow for Koke and Filipe Luis to continue to build chemistry down the left. Stefan Savic starts at right-back, due to injuries to both Sime Vrsaljko and Juanfran, with Jose Gimenez preferred to Lucas at centre-back. Fernando Torres starts up front.
TEAM NEWS: Leo Baptistao recovers in time to make the bench for Espanyol, with Felipe Caicedo maintaining his place alongside Gerard Moreno up top as a result. Jose Jurado continues on the right flank, with Victor Sanchez returning from a ban to partner Javi Fuego in central midfield. There are no surprises in defence or in between the sticks from Quique Sanchez Flores.
Diego Simeone's men find themselves in third place heading into this contest, but with Sevilla stirring in recent games, they need further points to cement their position in the table. Antoine Griezmann and company have been on fire of late, but Espanyol are well organised under Quique Sanchez Flores and are a tough unit to break down.
Hello and welcome to live coverage of today's evening kick-off in LaLiga, as Atletico Madrid travel to face Espanyol in the wake up of their Champions League midweek success. The hosts, meanwhile, are strong at home and will be looking for three points to give themselves an outside shot of a European finish themselves come the end of the campaign.
