Regular Season:

Format:
16 teams are drawn into 4 groups of 4 teams each (Groups A-D).
Teams are seeded into 2 pots as follows:
Pot 1: Santos, São Paulo, Palmeiras and Corinthians;
Pot 2: the other 16 teams.
Each group consists of 1 team from Pot 1 and 3 teams from Pot 2.
Each team plays the teams from the other three groups once - for a total of 12 games each, over 12 game weeks.

Scoring points:
3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss.

Table order:
1. points won; 2. games won; 3. total goal difference; 4. total goals scored; 5. lesser number of red cards received; 6. lesser number of yellow cards received; 7. draw.

Qualification for the Final Stages:
1-2 place of each group: qualify for the Final Stages

Relegation from the league:
Teams' records from the Regular Season are gathered in a single Summary Table.
15-16 place in the Summary table: relegated to Paulista A2

Summary Table order:
1. points won; 2. games won; 3. total goal difference; 4. total goals scored; 5. lesser number of red cards received; 6. lesser number of yellow cards received; 7. draw.

Promotion to the league:
2 teams from Paulista A2


Final Stages:
------------

Format:
8 teams from the Regular Season contest the Paulista A1 champion in a knockout format.

Quarter-finals:
Teams are paired according to their Regular Season standings:
1st in Group A vs 2nd in Group A (match E);
1st in Group B vs 2nd in Group B (match F);
1st in Group C vs 2nd in Group C (match G);
1st in Group D vs 2nd in Group D (match H).
Winners are decided over two legs.
The higher placed teams from the Regular Season host the second legs.

Semi-finals:
Teams are ranked according to their record from the Regular Season and Quarter-finals combined and are paired as follows:
1st ranked vs 4th ranked;
2nd ranked vs 3rd ranked.
Winners are decided over two legs.
The teams with better record from the Regular Season and the Quarter-finals combined host the second legs.

Final:
The two Semi-finals winners meet each other with the winner becoming Paulista A1 champion.
Winner is decided over two legs.
The team with better record from the Regular Season, Quarter-finals and Semi-finals combined hosts the second leg.

Tie-breakers for the knockout matches over two legs:
1. aggregate score from the two legs, 2. penalties.

Qualification for Serie D:
the three best placed teams: qualify for Serie D
* - if the three best placed teams are participating in Serie A, Serie B, Serie C or Serie D, the best placed team that isn't already assured participation in Serie a, Serie B, Serie C or Serie D qualifies instead.

Qualification for Copa do Brasil:
