Wigan clinch home semi-final with win over Huddersfield

20 September 2018 23:51

Wigan Warriors ensured they will have a home semi-final in the play-offs after recording a narrow 13-6 win at Huddersfield Giants in the driving rain.

It will be Warriors' sixth home semi-final in Shaun Wane's seven years in charge, with the head coach having already announced he will leave at the end of this season.

Sam Tomkins' early two-pointer and Morgan Escare's try gave Warriors a 6-0 lead at the interval, an advantage Escare increased by a point with an opportunistic drop-goal in the second half.

That looked crucial when Kruise Leeming crossed and Danny Brough added the extras to bring Huddersfield back within one point, but Oliver Gildart dotted down three minutes from time to make sure of Wigan's win.

After Tomkins' penalty, Escare was the first to cross when he brushed off Alex Mellor before crossing in a half where he also did brilliantly to prevent Matty English from sliding over at the other end.

A drop-goal attempt from Escare narrowly went over in the wind and rain at the start of the second half, but Huddersfield had hope when Leeming capitalised on Ryan Hinchcliffe's break.

However, Wigan's frequent attempts to get behind the Giants with grubber kicks finally paid off when George Williams dabbed the ball through for Gildart to collect and score.
