David Moyes has left West Ham following the end of his short-term contract as manager, the Premier League club have confirmed.
Former Everton and Manchester United boss Moyes was appointed until the end of this season last November, following a dreadful start to the campaign under predecessor Slaven Bilic.
West Ham secured their top-flight status with two games to spare thanks to a 2-0 win at Leicester City, but Moyes has presided over a fraught time at the club.
Supporters' unhappiness with West Ham's board has been evident since the club moved to London Stadium and those frustrations spilled over in unseemly fashion when some fans invaded the field and tried to storm the directors' box during a 3-0 home defeat against Burnley in March.
West Ham's joint-chairman David Sullivan – a target for plenty of that ire – thanked Moyes for keeping the team in the top flight and promised a "high-calibre" figure as his replacement.
"I would like to place on record my sincere thanks to David Moyes and his staff for achieving the target of keeping West Ham United in the Premier League." - Joint-Chairman David Sullivanhttps://t.co/GOROcGkLyn— West Ham United (@WestHamUtd) May 16, 2018
"I would like to place on record my sincere thanks to David Moyes and his staff for achieving the target of keeping West Ham United in the Premier League," said Sullivan in a statement that also confirmed Moyes' assistants Alan Irvine, Stuart Pearce and Billy McKinley would leave the club.
"Throughout his time here, David has carried himself with dignity and honesty and we have all found him to be a pleasure to work with. He, Alan, Stuart and Billy accepted the challenge and attacked it head on, turning around a difficult situation. They deserve great respect for the job they have done and they leave the club with our best wishes.
"When David and his team arrived, it was the wish of both parties that the focus be only on the six months until the end of the season, at which point a decision would be made with regards to the future. Having taken stock of the situation and reflected now the campaign is complete, we feel that it is right to move in a different direction.
"We are already taking steps to identify and recruit the manager we believe can take West Ham United forward in line with our ambitions. We aim to appoint a high-calibre figure who we feel will lead the club into an exciting future for our loyal supporters within the next 10 days."
Moyes signed a six-year contract after leaving Everton for Manchester United in 2013 but was sacked in April 2014, with the then-reigning Premier League champions heading for a seventh-place finish.
He went on to manage Real Sociedad and Sunderland before taking the reins at West Ham. None of the 55-year-old Scot's jobs since an 11-year stint at Goodison Park have lasted longer than 12 months.
