Players history-maker Kim out of Byron Nelson

15 May 2017 23:25

Kim Si-woo battled through the pain to earn a breakthrough triumph at the Players Championship, but the back injury he battled at TPC Sawgrass will force him to miss this week's AT&T Byron Nelson.

The South Korean, 21, claimed a three-shot victory on Sunday, finishing clear of Ian Poulter and Louis Oosthuizen to become the youngest winner in the history of the 'fifth major'.

Kim's victory is made all the more remarkable, as it emerges he required physiotherapy to even begin his final round.

Though keen to try and maintain momentum after his big win, Kim will take time out to heal.

"After consulting with my team last night and this morning, I have decided to withdraw from this week's AT&T Byron Nelson," Kim said in a statement.

"On Saturday night at The Players, my back began to flare up. On Sunday when I arrived, I received treatment from a physio on the putting green that helped me get through the round, and fortunately, win the tournament.

"Having dealt with that the last two days, I feel it is best for me to take precautionary measures to ensure I can play ad compete fully healthy for the rest of the season.

"I'm disappointed not to play this week, as the AT&T Byron Nelson is in my adopted hometown, but look forward to playing the event in the future."
