Blow for Thomas and Froome as Moscon is excluded

22 July 2018 23:18

Geraint Thomas and Chris Froome have lost an important part of their support network at the Tour de France after Gianni Moscon was thrown out of the race.

Moscon was excluded by race organisers after being caught punching Fortuneo-Samsic rider Elie Gesbert in the opening kilometres of Stage 15 on Sunday.

The video commissaire reviewed footage of the incident following the conclusion of the stage and removed Moscon from the classification for an "act of violence".

The 24-year-old has been sharing the workload with Luke Rowe at the front of the race for Team Sky in 2018, so his departure will be a blow for general classification hopefuls Thomas and Froome.

Sky boss Dave Brailsford vowed to "address the incident" at the end of the Tour, while offering his "sincere apologies" to Fortuneo-Samsic and Gesbert.

In a Twitter video released later on Sunday Moscon issued his own apology, saying: "I'm sorry for today's incident and I totally regret my actions.

"I would like to personally apologise to Elie Gesbert for the incident on today's stage. What happened was wrong and a bad example coming from me to everyone.

"I want to publicly apologise for what happened to my team-mates, everyone involved with Team Sky and the Tour de France.

"I make no excuse for it, I accept the decision of the race organisers. I let myself [down] really badly and I'm very sorry for that."
