Degenkolb: I need two or three secretaries to manage congratulations!

17 July 2018 11:39

John Degenkolb has thanked well-wishers for the hundreds of messages of congratulations that followed his first Tour de France stage win.

The German rider triumphed in Sunday's chaotic ninth stage, adding to previous Grand Tour wins in the Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a Espana.

Degenkolb was pictured in tears afterwards, his victory coming two-and-a-half years after a crash in training that almost saw him lose a finger as many doubted he would ever race again.

And as he prepared to return to the roads in Annecy two days later, Degenkolb was still weighed down by unread messages and unreturned calls, admitting he would need numerous secretaries to wade through his correspondence.

"I wish I could answer every call and every message on my phone but it was impossible," he told Cyclingnews.

"I would need two or three secretaries to manage all this but I still have about 150 unread messages. It's unbelievable.

"You try to call with your family and your friends and you enjoy the moment with them and, of course, we shared the moment as a team. It was great to see everyone so happy.

"It was a huge satisfaction to get this victory. Looking back at the images and the emotions that I had after the finish, it still brings everything up inside and it's a nice feeling. It's just amazing."
