Hawks smash Lions, Bulldogs see off Power

17 June 2012 14:24

The Hawks climbed to fifth on the ladder with their 65-point trouncing of the Brisbane Lions at the MCG, winning 19.21 (135) to 11.4 (70).

Brisbane started brightly with six first-quarter goals in the wet but that was where the positives ended for the visitors as Hawthorn booted 10 of the next 12 goals.

And the final margin could have been a lot larger if the Hawks were not so inaccurate.

Hawthorn annihilated the Lions in the inside-50 count (71-41) and were a lot harder at the contest, laying a club record 96 tackles to 70.

Shaun Burgoyne was instrumental for Hawthorn in the middle of the ground with 24 disposals, seven tackles, five clearances and two goals while Lance Franklin booted five, giving him 22 goals over the last three weeks.

For Brisbane, Dayne Zorko played the best game of his short career, registering 24 disposals, seven tackles, 10 inside 50s and three goals.

In the day's other match, the Bulldogs honoured the memory of Charlie Sutton with a 38-point win over Port Adelaide at Etihad Stadium.

Just 12 days after the club's legendary 1954 premiership captain-coach passed away, the Bulldogs produced the type of valiant team effort he would have been proud of as they eventually dispatched an injury-hit Port Adelaide, despite almost kicking themselves out of the contest.

The Bulldogs may have missed numerous shots at goal, but the 13.17 (95) to 8.9 (57) scoreline was still good enough to see off a Port side that ended the game a player short after Jacob Surjan (jaw/migraine) and Hamish Hartlett (hamstring) were both forced from the field.

Robert Murphy (32 disposals) was impressive off the half-back line while small forward Tory Dickson booted four goals.

For Port Adelaide, Matthew Broadbent (26 disposals) and Jay Schulz, who kicked three goals, battled hard.
