Tigers, Power play out thrilling draw

2 September 2012 11:31

Power captain Domenic Cassisi kicked a hurried point with less than a minute to go to level the scores at 16.10 (106) to 16.10 (106) before the final siren sounded on the only draw of the season.

Richmond led by as many as 12 points late in the final quarter but failed to hold on for the victory as a determined Port Adelaide kicked the last two goals of the game at the MCG.

Riewoldt booted six goals, ending the season with 65 majors and passing Fremantle's Matthew Pavlich and Geelong's Tom Hawkins, who both finished on 62.

The key forward, who also won the award in 2010, secured the honour with the lowest tally of goals since Hawthorn's Leigh Matthews kicked 67 in 1965.

Trent Cotchin, one of the favourites for the Brownlow Medal, was instrumental for the Tigers with 31 possessions in a performance that could potentially earn him decisive votes from the umpires.

The match was Port Adelaide caretaker coach Garry Hocking's last at the helm, while Chris Newman announced before the game that he would be stepping down as Richmond captain next season.

St Kilda ruined Brett Ratten's send-off, coming from behind in the final term to snatch a 15-point victory at Etihad Stadium on Sunday to finish their season on a high.

The Saints gave up a 14-point lead in the second quarter and found themselves trailing by 15 midway through the last when Brock McLean kicked truly.

In keeping with a horror season, the Blues kicked inaccurately, booting four of their 19 behinds in the final term as they kept St Kilda in the contest.

The Saints made them pay as unanswered goals from David Armitage, Jack Steven, Stephen Milne, Rhys Stanley and Ahmed Saad in a late 15-minute burst saw them salvage a 16.10 (106) to 12.19 (91) victory.

Brisbane ended the season with three consecutive wins after steamrolling a disappointing Western Bulldogs outfit by 67 points at the Gabba.
