Magpies edge Swans, Blues overcome Lions

11 August 2012 14:57

Already missing Dane Swan on a club-imposed suspension, the Magpies suffered a major setback when Thomas was subbed out of the game early in the second term with a knee injury.

The visitors led by three points at the main break but trailed by as many as 17 in the third term before bouncing back with three late goals to close within a solitary point at the final break.

The Magpies reclaimed the lead almost immediately with a goal from Jarryd Blair but had to withstand a sustained onslaught from the Swans, who squandered several scoring chances.

Collingwood looked home when Travis Cloke kicked his third late in the final term but when Ben McGlynn snapped truly in the final minute the contest was back in the balance.

But former Swan Darren Jolly won the clearance before Dayne Beams kicked his third goal to seal the 12.6 (78) to 9.16 (70) victory in front of a 45,827 crowd.

Carlton kept their slim finals chances alive with a 36-point win over the Brisbane Lions at Etihad Stadium.

The Lions were quick out of the blocks but could not hold off the Blues, who kicked away in the third quarter to win 17.11 (113) to 10.17 (77).

Adelaide all but rubberstamped a coveted top-two berth after defeating a gallant Fremantle by 28 points at AAMI Stadium.

The Crows' 17.17 (119) to 14.7 (91) triumph ended the Dockers' five-match winning streak and, barring a series of late-season upsets, ensures Adelaide will host a qualifying final.

Patrick Dangerfield was at his scintillating best, undoubtedly stitching up three Brownlow votes with his 33 possessions (21 contested), two goals, nine clearances and eight tackles.

Nick Riewoldt was carried off with a knee injury as St Kilda beat Melbourne by 25 points in a lacklustre match at the MCG.

Gold Coast all but handed the wooden spoon to Greater Western Sydney with a scrappy 30-point win - their first ever at Metricon Stadium.
