Chancellor announces NFL retirement

2 July 2018 03:09

Seattle Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor has played his last NFL game.

The 30-year-old Chancellor suffered a severe neck injury making a tackle last season and missed the final seven games of the year.

The four-time Pro Bowl player has not received medical clearance to return to action, and he posted a series of tweets saying goodbye to the sport on Sunday.

"I've played through all types of bruises and injuries at a high level. But this one, I just can't ignore," he tweeted.

"When the doctors told me what was going on in November, I could feel my heart drop to my stomach … To walk away from the game by choice is one thing, to walk away from the game because of the risk of paralysis is another."

NFL Network clarified that Chancellor is not officially retiring, which will allow him to collect $11.4million in guaranteed salary the next two seasons.

Chancellor leaves a rich legacy as a member of the stingy 'Legion of Boom' defense that helped the Seahawks win the franchise's first Super Bowl in 2014.
